The Warehouse of the Future

The future of warehouses will have to be based on the changing behaviour of people. Warehouses will need to adapt to the growing popularity of online shopping and the increasing demand for click-and-collect services. But how can they do this?

To meet the increasing demand for cheaper, higher-quality products and faster services from customers, companies will need to invest in a complete redesign of their supply chain. Warehouses in the suburbs of major cities are being transformed into hubs. Many of these hubs are shared by several manufacturers.

This type of model requires a high level of trust among manufacturers, retailers, and third-party logistics providers. To keep their stock flowing and moving through the system at any moment, companies will have to better manage their supply chain. In order to facilitate cross-docking, many warehouses are likely to become local transit sheds or hubs for parcels and pallets.

In all likelihood, the demand for shorter lead time from customers will mean that large centralised centres will be replaced with smaller local centres. This will allow for much quicker home delivery and reduce fuel costs for businesses. Online shopping will lead to the need for more technologically advanced solutions that can pick and pack small orders faster. Automated systems will be more important in this area. Humans will still be needed in warehouses, but they will be limited to working as engineers and IT specialists, rather than manual workers. However, the need for pickers, gift wrappers, and other services will continue to exist.
