The Things That you Should Look Out for If you Want to Buy an Older Property

An old house is something that many people who are looking for a property are attracted to – with quirks and original features, you can see the appeal of an older property. However, if this is something that you are considering, there are also lots of things that you should take into account before you go ahead and buy one.

These are some things to think about…

Asbestos – In the 20th Century, asbestos was a popular material used for all kinds of things. It is heat proof so was great for using in areas that get hot, as well as being a great form of insulation. However, it is also dangerous when broken up as the small fibres cause long term health issues and because of this it has not been used in building in the UK since 2000.

There are lots of homes that still have asbestos in them and when you are buying an older property this is certainly something that you should check, as you should get it removed by a professional.

Wiring and Electricals – Many older homes will also have older wiring, and electrical wiring that has been done decades ago could be risky. As well as being prone to damage, older wiring may not also be done to modern safety standards, so it is worth getting it checked by an electrician. Also get a professional like this TV aerial installation Stroud based company  Steve Unett Aerials to check the aerial as this could also be on the older side.

Damp – A common problem that people find with older properties is damp, especially if they have not been as well maintained as they could have been. Things like damages to the roof, as well as rising damp can be very expensive to repair, so make sure that you have a surveyor check the property out fully for signs of damp.

Energy Efficiency – Older homes may also not be as energy efficient as their modern counterparts. Things like older doors and windows could mean that you will have higher heating bills, and older properties may not be as well insulated as more modern ones, so this is something else that is worth considering before you buy.
